In Memory of Gary Edwards

Class of 1966
Lee-Davis High School

EDWARDS, Gary Fielden, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2014. He was the son of Irene W. Edwards and Fielden Earl Edwards. He is survived by his wife, Mary Margaret; daughter, Hong "Tina" Roberts; grandsons, Josh Tan and Kellan Roberts; great-granddaughter, Lillianne Tan; and brothers, Greg, Keith and Boyd Edwards.

Gary was a 1966 graduate of Lee Davis High School, where as an all-state linebacker and fullback, he led his team to the state championship. He served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969, during the Vietnam War. In 1973, at the age of 26, Father Time as he was to be known to his teammates, entered Ferrum College. Coached by the great Hank Norton, Gary helped lead the Panthers to the 1974 Junior College National Championship. In 2013, his 1974 team was inducted into the Ferrum University Football Hall of Fame. Following Ferrum, he matriculated to the University of Richmond and played with the 1975 Southern Conference Champion Team. At age 30, he was co-captain of the 1976 UR Spider football team.

In 1977, he, along with other business partners, opened the original after-hour's club, Fielden's. He was later proprietor of Benjamin's Restaurant and Jazz Club. His devotion, generosity and love for family and friends remained uncompromised throughout his life.
