In Memory of Igor Taran

Class of 1966
Lee-Davis High School

TARAN, Igor Oleksa, 65, of Richmond, Va., died February 1, 2014, surrounded by family after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his mother, Zinaida Mykolaeevna Taran (nee Martynenko); and father, Oleksa Kindrat Taran. He is survived by Lucy Halunko, his companion, best friend, sweetheart and wife of the past 28 years; his brothers, Boris Oleksa Taran (Pamela) and Gleb Oleksa Taran; niece, Kathryn Alexandra Taran; nephews, Nicholas Boris Taran, Nicholas Gleb Taran and Andrew Gleb Taran.

He was born in post World War II Germany, to parents who had been forcibly removed by German occupying authorities from Reichskommissariat Ukraine in 1944 and sent to Germany, where they were interned as "Ost Arbeiter" (East Workers). Igor was born in the Ganghofersiedlung Displaced Persons (DP) Camp in Regensburg, Germany in the American Allied Occupation Zone. Under the auspices of the International Refugee Organization (IRO), he embarked at Bermerhaven, Germany on the United States Army Transport ship, USAT General M.B. Stewart (AP-140), with his parents and older brother to the U.S. in September 1949. He celebrated his 1st birthday on the high seas, aboard the USAT General M.B. Stewart, while steaming to America. Upon docking and in-processing at Ellis Island, New York City, the family proceeded by train to Richmond (Main Street Station), where they were met by their American sponsor.

He grew up in Richmond, in Church Hill and the Fan District, and in Hanover County. His first entry into business was as a Richmond Times-Dispatch delivery boy in Ellerson, Va. He was a lifelong parishioner of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, where he served as an acolyte. In high school, he was an enthusiastic track and field man, graduating from Lee-Davis High School in 1966. He attended R.P.I. / V.C.U., where he was also a member of the early Barge Club (V.C.U. Crew). He was employed for many years by the Saunders Oil Company in Richmond, before going into business as a manufacturer's representative for Santana Products. Subsequently, he entered into a business partnership operating as Taranco - Newport, Inc, Richmond, Va.

He had many and varied interests. He was an early and avid longboard surfer, spending many summers along the Atlantic. He was also a serious cyclist, training for and completing a marathon 13-hour trip from Richmond to the Virginia Beach oceanfront. He was a downhill skier, and enjoyed sailing on the Brandermill Lake, James River and Chesapeake Bay. He was certified SCUBA diver, who dived on Atlantic shipwrecks and sunken U-Boats. He tailgated annually at the Strawberry Hill Steeplechase and attended many Preakness Stakes. He enjoyed hockey, Formula One and NASCAR racing and followed his beloved V.C.U. Rams basketball team to the end. He was a member of the Richmond Ski Club and a charter member of the Greater Richmond Sailing Association. He was a member of the Kozaky Ukrainian Dance Group in his younger years and was actively involved supporting his Ukrainian heritage in the Richmond and Tidewater area. He dearly loved his cats.
